Ortho Tri-Cyclen

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a drug used for preventing pregnancy. It is also used for regulating menstrual cycle and treating certain symptoms of menopause.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a combination drug, which contains progestin and estrogen hormones. The drug comes in tablet form and has to be taken either in the morning or at bed time. Never miss a dose or delay in starting a pack as it only increases the chance of getting pregnant. During the first 13 packs, you may experience spotting, slight bleeding and stomach upset. Well, do not stop the drug at this time. Noirmally the side effects go away in a few days.

While taking Ortho Tri-cyclen, do not smoke as it increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. The drug also becomes less effective if you are using any antibiotics or anticonvulsants.

If preparing for any surgery, you have to inform the surgeon that you are on Ortho Tri-Cyclen medication. The surgeon may sometimes ask you to stop taking the drug for sometime.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen may also cause vision problems if you are nearsighted or if are using contact lenses. The drug can also cause the darkening of the skin of the face. It is better to use some sunscreen lotions or creams when going out.

As like other medicines, Ortho Tri-Cyclen also interacts with other drugs. Therefore, you have to inform the doctor about all the medications, including the prescriptive and over-the-counter medicines, which you are taking. It is better to avoid the drug while breast feeding as it may cause harm to the newborn.
